Celebrating the craft of tie dyeing introduced to Japan from China 1300 years ago and establishing itself as the art of the poor who could not afford expensive silks. The ultimate recycled style as clothes would be re dyed and stitched together to renew them. From this practicality evolved the countless variations we see from history, including Boro, the art of stitching on Shibori fabrics. Most artisans worked from their houses and the manual process would sometimes involve people working together to produce a single work. Cloth and towels would be sold to travellers passing by the houses of the artisans. A practically perfect eco product...Hooray !
