Our Story

It’s hard to believe now, but most people never considered the possibility of designing and printing their own wallpaper, home decor and fabric just 14 years ago. At that time, not only was printing a unique design expensive (from $50 per yard for bulk orders up to $150 a yard for smaller orders), but many surface pattern artists didn’t have a low-investment platform to distribute their designs to shoppers. In short, most of us were buying the designs that stores offered us, because it was fast, affordable and the only option.

Spoonflower’s founders, Stephen Fraser and Gart Davis, had already helped launch the technological wave of print-on-demand, self-published books in the early 2000s. And so, when Stephen’s wife was frustrated that she couldn’t find a yellow fabric with oversize polka dots for drapes, Stephen thought that surely there should be a site that allows the average consumer to make a few yards of uniquely designed fabric.

Fast-forward to Spoonflower’s offices today, and you’ll see exactly what you’d expect from a company that celebrates self-expression, community, color and pattern. Broad swathes of wallpaper feature chevron elephants on parade and abstract kilim designs, chairs showcase fabric with geometric, shibori art and orange hedgehogs. It’s a place that feels warm and convivial, with just enough wit to keep it relatable.

The Spoonflower community has grown to over 3.3 million creatives who use the Marketplace of more than one million designs to express their personal style and power their entrepreneurial spirit. What began as a fabric-by-the-yard business has expanded into wallpaper and home decor. Now designers can see their art come to life on table linens, bedding, and home goods, and shoppers have more unique options for their personal space than ever before! Spoonflower’s digital print process continues to innovate on the pillars our founders set into motion through:

  • An eco-friendly process
  • Sustainable operational practices
  • Water-based pigment inks and dyes
  • Initiatives that continue to lower waste byproducts
