the Ukraine, design © Nancy Lee Moran
Repeat is 27 inches wide by 18 inches high (including the half-brick). Some years ago, I painted a portrait for a family in which the wife had grown up in the Ukraine. Vira kindly let me borrow her Pysanka eggs, which have traditional techniques, symbols, and colors. Chicken and goose eggs have written-wax batik, using traditional folk motifs, colors, and designs. The ostrich egg has been carved in a traditional Ukrainian technique of Rizblenky. Vira also let me borrow a traditional Ukrainian costume, from which the blue stitchery arises. I added some lampwork beads (from my own small collection) to enhance the beauty of the pattern. I hope you enjoy sewing with it, just as I enjoyed creating it and learning about Ukrainian culture. I hope you will show me the projects you create with my fabrics. It would be joy to see them.
