I have been in more parades than I can count. For 13 years I drove an art car that was pretty much like an everyday parade. Because of my art car and the fame it got from Harrod Blanks Wild Wheels documentaries and National Geographic, I was invited to parades all across the country. Getting to these parades meant a cross country parade in itself. From Mardi Gras parades to the indy 500 and so many awesome places and events. The 20th anniversary celebration of the famous Cadilac Ranch sculpture and being asked to do figure 8's in frount of the Cadilacs amongst hundreds of camera flashes. The Burmingham Museum of fine arts where myself and a motley band of art car artist, (my friends) arrived and displayed our cars at the museum steps, following a parade thru town. We were treated like real celebrities by the fine folks of Burmingham and they threw an elegant, suave party in our honor. We also did small town community parades, usually for charity events but sometimes just to parade. The the high school marching bands leading our way through town while the folks laughed at our cars and the children, wide eyed, wondering at something they hadn't yet seen in their short lives living in rural America. The night I first laid a paint brush on an old 1972 yellow Volkswagon beetle I had no clue what an adventure was just beginning but I'm glad the fates guilded my hand that night. That night was the beginning of a living parade and a thousand friends and experiences I will never forget. I feel blessed by the universe to have taken me farther than I'd ever dreamed. I hope you enjoy my interpretation of what a "Marching Band" means to me and the memories it releases in my heart.
