To compete with Ford's Pinto, Chevrolet's Vega, the VW beetle, and Toyota's Corolla, American Motors introduced the Gremlin in April 1970. It was a bizarrely different looking car with a full sized front (based on their then-current Hornet) and a back sawed off as if the car were taking method acting classes in playing a sneaker. Those models that had a rear seat at all, could fit only a small child or dog on them. Not all cars were built with any rear seat at all. As a newly licensed 16 year old when they came out, I thought they were adorable. But my father bought me a Pinto instead. (file w104bb-ch, #5387595)
