Prior to sculpting Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills of South Dakota, Borglum began work on the Confederate Memorial Carving in Stone Mountain, Ga. He abandoned the Stone Mountain project two years later due to a conflict with the project's managing association. It was finished by other artists nearly 50 years later.
