collector niche where it is a fifties icon today
The Edsel was a stand alone automobile marque (it is not a Ford Edsel any more than a Mercury or Lincoln were Ford Mercury or Ford Lincoln cars) manufactured from 1957 through November 1959, as 1958, 1959, and 1960 cars. Each year was completely different. It lives in automotive infamy as both an icon of fifties styling excess, and the brunt of many jokes. But the joke is now on those who laughed at the sales failure. A surviving Edsel, in mint restored condition, can be worth ten times its original sticker price today. (frame 546103)
