‘Race around the Parthenon (TINY)' (https://www.spoonflower.com/fabric/7704106): Continuous racing horses and riders with Greek keys in red, blue and black (see below) on a 'marble' off-white (#f8f5ec) ground. For Judi Niermann of MemawMadeItCreations. ‘Race around the Parthenon (SMALL)' (https://www.spoonflower.com/fabric/7370021) is a SMALL (somewhat larger than this) and slightly different version (less Greek Key). © Su Schaefer 2018 ~ with thanks to my sources: (1) S. Bird (British Museum) for the drawing of the horses + riders from the north frieze cavalcade on the Parthenon, from which this has been adapted (although the coloring-in is mine); and (2) Jenkins for the color scheme, who writes: "Early Greek architectural polychromy probably experimented with a wider range of colours but, by the fifth century BC, the most popular [were] red, blue, and gold applied as leaf. These were combined with the reserved ground of the white marble, thus adding a fourth colour. Red will have been a naturally occurring or artificially produced pigment such as oxide of iron. Blue was usually a copper silicate, either naturally occurring, as in volcanic rocks, or manufactured. The colour was the deep, rich, inky blue of lapis lazuli and is sometimes called Egyptian blue. Gold was the warm yellow tone of pure unalloyed metal, sometimes enhanced by an undercoat of red or blue (bole)"; both in Jenkins, Ian. Greek architecture and its sculpture.
