ecosystem and one of its key residents, the Garibaldi.
This sea kelp and Garibaldi design is available in other color combinations, and can be scaled smaller or larger upon request. The hand-drawn mini-lesson texts read: Kelp is Macroalgae, Kelp Sequesters CO2, Kelp Provides a Habitat for Garibaldi, and some kelp anatomy—Blades, Gas Bladders, Stipe, and Holdfast. As a Marine Biology and Ecology teacher, the World Ocean Collection is my way of “spreading the word” about one of our planet’s most critical natural resources—the ocean. Most of the Earth is covered by one global ocean (divided into five main ocean basins) that is the source of most life on Earth and is the major influence on our planet’s weather and climate. The ocean’s incredible diversity of life and ecosystems support our human population in a variety of ways, from food and tourism to medical discoveries and cures. Yet, only about 95% of the global ocean has been explored! Understanding and caring for the health of our world ocean is the key to the future of our planet, and helps us to tackle issues like climate change, pollution, habitat degradation, overfishing, and ocean acidification. My World Ocean Collection will be a compilation of a variety of marine ecosystems, and each series will be focused around a habitat mini-lesson on fabric. This current design features the California sea kelp community with one of its star players, the Garibaldi, the official State Marine Fish of California.
