This Catholic Woodland creature art has been mulling about in my mind for awhile. The use of symbols in the Catholic faith has always appealed to my imagination. Here are just a few with rich meaning and beauty found in this fabric. “Symbols are powerful because they are the visible signs of invisible realities.” - Saint Augustine Peacock In Catholic art the peacock is used as the symbol of immortality. This symbolism is derived from an ancient belief that the flesh of the peacock does not decay. It is with this meaning that it appears in scenes of the Nativity. Fish One of the oldest Christian symbols is the fish. It was used by Christians to identify themselves among each other. Lamb One of the most important symbols of Christ is the Lamb. Jesus us the sacrificial lamb. The whiteness of the Lamb symbolises innocence and purity Deer The deer takes its symbolic significance from Psalm 42:1 “As the deer longs for streams of water,a so my soul longs for you, O God." Thus, the deer has come to symbolize the desire for deepening holiness Rabbit The rabbit, who defenseless, is a symbol of men who put the hope of their salvation in Christ. Dove The dove has many uses as a symbol in our faith. We most often use the dice to represent the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit. Another use is as a symbol of peace. At the time of the flood, when Noah sent out for the last time the dove from the ark, it brought back an olive branch to show that the waters had receded and that God made peace with man.
