Instead of the typical swooning princess, here's some warrior royalty. Growing up with books like Dealing with Dragons, The Song of the Lioness, and a few other series as role models for storybook princesses, I was always a little disappointed that all the princess options when I went to the store with my mother were pink and the girls never seemed to do anything interesting. Thankfully, things have gotten better in regards to kick butt female characters, but when Spoonflower's Whimsical storybook design challenge was announced, I couldn't resist doing something with princesses who had more going on in their lives than just a prince. Whether they be druids, dragon tamers, warriors, or witches, these princesses have all the things I loved to pretend to be when I was little. The original was done in watercolor and pencil, then scanned, arranged, and edited in photoshop and indesign. The background color is digital. This textile was created for Spoonflower's whimsical wonderland design contest. Want a custom fabric design? I'm a freelance illustrator and am always open to new projects!
