I remembered the rhyme about the animal fair, in which "the big baboon by the light of the moon was combing his auburn hair" and "the monkey fell out of his bunk and slid down the elephant's trunk". We know that "the elephant sneezed and fell on his knees, but what became of the monkey, monkey, monkey...?" So I have drawn the moment after the sneeze when the monkey has disappeared from the centre of the scene, but can perhaps be found elsewhere in the jungle. (I love the French artist Henri Rousseau's collage-like paintings of jungles, so I have tried to make mine as complex and interesting to look at, so the monkeys are well hidden!)
