The Grand Army of the Republic was a fraternal veteran's club for men who had served in the Union army during the Civil War. In part akin to an overgrown boy scout troop, they took part in patriotic parades, exchanged trading ribbons and buttons, and organized camp out reunions during the late 19th and into the early 20th century. Their re-enactments of 1861-1865 life are not all that different than the activities of history buffs today, except that today's "Union soldiers" can get into their air conditioned SUV's and call the pizza shop on their way home, after the camp out is done.
