The stars are made from photographs or scans of things such as birds (e.g., a meadowlark, a ruby-throated hummingbird, a blue jay), flowers (e.g., roses, tulips, dahlias, etc.), drawings I made with crayons or markers, tiles in Ottoman mosques and palaces, coral on the sea floor, autumn leaves I gathered in my yard, a sapphire, and those sorts of things.
