The last quarter of the 18th century saw an increase of cotton for dresses, large motives often exotic or combined with European motivs were all the rage. Due to the laboursome proces of blockprinting these fabrics were often as expensive as silk. The European printers were inventive and soon they found easier ways to print large designs on cotton making them affordable and washable substitutes for silks.
