I started focusing my artwork into textile design and printing in 2010. Exploring pattern and color, I enjoy learning new ways to express myself creatively. A few years ago, I decided to focus my patterns into a series I called LAND, SEA, SKY. Using these three categories as guides, I found inspiration from the natural world. I have always found inspiration in the world around me and this series enabled me to explore many areas of life. It is a personal challenge for me to interpret things and turn them into textile patterns and repeats. Self imposed limits help me to focus and find inventive ways to see things in a new way.
The third pattern I created in this series was the CORAL WAVE print.
I’ve always admired how coral grows in such a beautiful lines. This was the continuation for my LAND, SEA, SKY series fitting into the SEA category. I wanted to express the lines and the skeleton nature of coral in my drawings, and make sure the pattern would work in a variety of directions.
While spending my evenings ink drawing coral, I began to think about the meaning of coral. Coral has been believed to have mysterious properties. It can symbolize wisdom, immortality, wisdom and happiness. Coral reefs are home to one quarter of the ocean’s animal species, providing shelter and spawning grounds. Coral also helps regulate carbon dioxide levels in the oceans. It is an honor to reinterpret this natural phenomenon into a pattern. This pattern will add color, help add happiness and add an element of protection to any project.
This year, I have returned to my classic design and recolored it in a few new color ways. I hope it inspires you to make something colorful and fun.
