Paisley is one of those motifs that has been around forever. Before the paisley we know today, it was woven in India and called boteh. In the 17th century weaving a paisley shaw with a spaced layout could take up to 5 years to complete, but it could then be sold to costumers in Europe for the same price as a London townhouse. In the 1800s European tastes influenced the design, which led to the allover layout. Printing methods advanced as the design became more popular in Europe and boteh eventually became Paisley after a town in Scotland where it was produced. I was inspired to create this pattern while reading about the history of the design in Patternalia by Jude Stewart.
