About the Design

These whimsical bottles might once have held the noxious nostrums of the patent medicine trend.

Now, they're pretty on a window sill.

Patent medicines were hawked in the 17th to 19th centuries, often by travelling salesmen (the real-world counterpart of the Wizard of Oz was a seller of patent medicines). The advertising for these substances formed the beginning of marketing and branding as a science. Called "snake oil salesmen," the purveyors of patent medicines would often attribute their curative powers to the alchemy of the Far East. Were they motivated by cultural appropriation and cheap exoticism? Yes, indeed -- but a historic moment in American advertising nonetheless! And it's a great example of the ways Western culture uses Eastern motifs to convey luxury and mystery. This collection of hand-painted antique medicine bottles is quite a large-scale print -- order extra for matching! Colors: Ivory (background), Fennel Green, Persimmon, Kumquat, Blue Glass This design will color-coordinate with any other Loch Nest Farm design that lists the same colors in its description.
