When I was very small, my dad gave me a scrap block of wood and said I was allowed to hammer as many nails as I wanted into it. This gave me many hours of joy, sitting at the picnic table in the back yard. He even painted it pink for me, using leftover house paint! This design is an homage to this favorite low-budget toy.
