Soft orange lattice over a cream background. Evocative of the strong geometric architectures of fences and buildings in New Mexico.

The Rio Grande valley is an oasis of color in the high desert of central New Mexico. The dense ribbon of trees that we call the bosque (’bos-kay’) provides cover for vibrant and whimsical wildlife. Acequia (‘ah-say-key-ahs’) deliver water from the Rio Grande to nearby farms. We often see roadrunner (our state bird), rabbits, quail, coyote and prickly pear cactus as we hike along the acequia trails. Fences made from adobe (‘a-doe-bay’) brick or wooden latillas (‘la-tea-yas’) provide a strong geometric backdrop for colorful high desert gardens. From the high desert plants in bloom to earth tones of red, purple and green, the New Mexico high desert is a surprising source of color and inspiration.
