Racing gaff-rigged skiffs. These boats have fascinated me since I saw my first one on the brag wall of a local sailing club. © Su Schaefer 2013.

Racing gaff-rigged skiffs on a light colored grunge-style sea. I've been fascinated by the shape of these boats ever since I saw one in a 1930s picture on the brag wall of the Sydney Flying Squadron (Australia's oldest open boat sailing club). Modern racing skiffs are a wonderful sight on the harbour - from the distance they look like a flight of water-borne butterflies.

The 18 ft Skiff is considered the fastest class of sailing skiffs and has a long racing history, beginning on Sydney Harbour, Australia in 1892 and a bit later in New Zealand. Although the boat has changed significantly since then, with many technological innovations, the class is popular with sailors of modern 18 ft skiffs looking for a challenge because "modern boats have become too easy to sail" (quoting John Winning, a class champion [Wikipedia]).

A coordinating stripe is 'Grunge sailor's jersey stripes', and another version of this design is 'Racing gaff-rigged skiffs on sparkly blue' - on a sparkly blue sea.

koalalady says: Comes under the heading (for me) of things I haven't seen for a long time. Magnificent colors and on a grey day the sea could be THAT color! OOops you don't have grey days- that's here.

su_g says: Swatch on basic combed cotton at the same scale. I'm very pleased with how the background canvas printed - unlikely colors for a sea but I like it!

rhondadesigns says: The aerial perspective of your design makes me think of a bird's eye view over Sydney Harbour during the exciting moments when the skiffs are racing for the finishing line! Another wonderful sailing theme design, Su!
