Squared out: an abstract color grid in the beach-side colors of late afternoon. Chalk on canvas. © Su Schaefer 2012

The chalk texture prints beautifully on basic cotton - see the 2nd thumbnail above (double click for a clearer view) - & would be great on linen-cotton canvas I think.

su_g says: Showing how nicely the chalk texture prints - I think this will do really well on linen-cotton canvas, but it would also be fun on crepe de chine - a sort of contradiction of textures!

su_g says: Thanks for the "beachy keen" Cal - much appreciated... wish I had a little beach house to show it off in too!

materialsgirl says: Oh wow....beachy keen! The informal, playful and beachy characteristics of the chalk texture and colors is perfect with this piece. Wish I had a sweet little beach house to decorate with this cloth .... or a terrycloth fabric option for a set of towels! A fun and sunny design.

su_g says: Thanks so much Janet, Angela and Rhonda for your great feedback... I was so pleased that the nautical flags, and the gritty (sandy) texture were picked up in your comments. I love the idea of this being like beach glimpses through tiny windows (some of them with tiny venetians!). It's an interesting process to make a "whole" through tiny pieces - quite different to scoping out a big design. I also learnt that odd numbers are the magic numbers for repeating check-based designs (hope I can remember that)!

rhondadesigns says: I love how you have combined so many elements of a beach scene in an interesting, well-balanced, geometric format, Su! It is like seeing glimpses of the beach through tiny windows. The gritty texture, so like beach sand, adds to the seaside "feel" of the design.

georgeandgracie says: You always amaze me. This is beachy on several levels, including an allusion to nautical flags.
