Your mitochondria - the powerhouse of the cell - all come from your mother - it's true. Thought to have evolved from single-celled organisms that found themselves in a symbiotic relationship with host organisms, these specialized organelles have their very own form of DNA that can be traced back through the maternal line of populations. mtDNA mutates rapidly, so actual population movements can be discerned across generations. This is a highly stylized image and not entirely accurate. I chose to place a circle at one end as an indicator of the mtDNA itself when in actuality the entire interior of a mitochondria is a highly folded space. It just made it look livelier to me. For those who don't like this abuse of my artistic license, you don't find flowers inside a cell either but I liked them too. View more of the Microscopic design collection.
