A lot of the themes that hippies recycled in the Haight Ashbury days were not created wholly by the teens and twenty-somethings of the 1960's. They came from the 1880's. Just take a look at old Burpee seed catalogs of that era. The twisting text and dripping lines were all from the 1880-1920 times, and there were objects from those eras still in second hand stores or attics in the sixties.
