Description:

Inspired by a 1952 fabric in the Met Museum Collection.

For the 1950s Spoonflower design challenge, I didn't want to make a fabric with images of things from the 1950s, but inspired by fabrics of the 1950s. This pattern is inspired by a dress in the collection at the Met Museum, designed by Carolyn Schnurer. Her 1952 collection was influenced by Japanese textiles and shibori dye patterns. My pattern is not a reproduction or recreation of her fabric, but is my take on the idea. I used hourglass and lemon shapes, which often appear in shibori patterns, to create a geometric pattern. I layered the color with a photo of a piece of shibori dyed fabric I made, so the shapes have a subtle handdyed texture. Scale: Hourglass shapes are about 5 inches tall.
