About the Design

“Patu tiki” is a Marquesan phrase that roughly translates to “striking a design,” according to early 20th century anthropologist Willowdean Chatterson Handy. My design is inspired by her research published in “Tattooing in the Marquesas,” Bernice P. Bishop Museum Bulletin #1, Honolulu, Hawai’i, 1922.
