When I was in first grade our teacher read us a short story by Conrad Aiken about a boy our age who retreated into a fantasy world of snow. Exactly why somebody would choose to read that to a squirmy room of six to seven year olds, instead of say, Winnie the Pooh, I could not tell you. But I can say that I was entranced enough to remember it after all these years, and still can not stand Winnie the Pooh. This is a portrait of the fantasy world David preferred to his school work, in that science fiction fantasy. (file D143b3-ch, #2900521)
