About the Design

The so-called bullet nose design of the 1950 Studebaker was a radical departure from the decade old designs that auto companies put out when they resumed production in 1946 (with basically 1942 style cars). Jokes were made that you could not tell if it was coming or going. But it became an icon of the post war car boom and remains a symbol of the fifties today. This actual advertisement from the Sacramento Union (California) newspaper features the Les Schwimley Motors dealership of 1510 J Street, who would let you put $633 dollars down and pay $68.68 a week to buy your new Champion. Exactly how many weeks that entailed, or why it had that 68 cents, or even what the car's final price was, is left unsaid.
