This design is based on the Red-speckled Parrotfish (Cetoscarus bicolor) first described by Rueppell in 1828 (my source is Gerry Allen's 'Marine fishes of the Great Barrier Reef and South-east Asia' published by Periplus Editions, 1997, WA Museum, with illustrations by Roger Swainston and Jill Ruse). Parrotfish do not have individual teeth but rather a "beak-like structure" - as if the teeth have fused together - so they're nibblers or gnawers rather than biters. They're also incredibly brightly colored. No art can do justice to their colors. Or to the noise they make as they gnaw on coral in the reef. A pack of parrotfish can be nearly deafening.
