I've lived in this crazy town for 15 years and as I'm realizing it will soon be time to move on to more spacious pastures, I decided to take this opportunity to pay tribute to some of my favorite things I love about New York City. Having lived in three of the five boroughs, I decided to sprinkle in a little from each, because it's not just about Manhattan. Knowing the before and the after, the WTC will always be a part of my landscape, so it was a given that they'd have a special place here too.

How many other things can you identify? Some are certainly familiar to visitors, some are probably more familiar to locals. Can you spot Patience? And I admit I have a strange soft spot for our water towers, so I totally went overboard putting them all over the place. Oh, New York City, you big, dirty, insomniac of an apple, you.

Nothing like NY! l became so homesick on the 4th of July. I absolutely love your work. I recognize the Chrysler bldg, the twin towers, the brownstones, etc.

sammyk

sammyk says: Thanks so much theboerwar, francine, jumping_birds and karenharveycox! Yup, Natasha, you got it right! With a bit of liberty having the subway run through it, that is Grand Army Plaza! I don't know where you live, but if you happen to be anywhere near the Lowe's home improvement store in Brooklyn, you can see another version I drew of it on a two-paneled mural I have there. I'm a bit obsessed with that arch. Maybe it's because of the secret puppets that live inside it. :D

natasha_k_

natasha_k_ says: This is so awesome! As someone who's also been living in NY for over a decade, I identify with your design 100%. The Flatiron, Coney Island, the State pavilion, the Brooklyn Bridge and all those rooftop water tanks! Is that arch Grand Army Plaza? So personal and brings memories. Great tribute!

Posted almost 6 years ago.

francine

Posted almost 6 years ago.

theboerwar

Posted almost 6 years ago.

sammyk

sammyk says: Wowza, thank you all so much! I'm absolutely loving seeing all the entries for this contest and the array of cities covered is thrilling too. Kelly, that's a shining review from a fellow Gotham gal; means a lot! Now everybody, come for a visit! Insider tip: cabbies can't refuse to take you anywhere, so don't let 'em say no and then drive off....get in the car first and demand your destination. They might then drive like crazed angry maniacs, but you'll get to where you're going. Hahaha.
