I had already created the three brooms as a design but was further inspired when I heard the report about education in Uganda and Kenya. Although education in these countries is listed as "free," there are hidden costs. One Ugandan mother was enraged when, after having met all the requirements for her daughter's enrollment in school, she was told that her daughter also needed to bring three brooms. The mother did not have enough money to buy three brooms so her daughter had to go back home. Further reading at gsdmagazine.org revealed children also had been asked to bring bags of cement or toilet paper before being enrolled in "free" school. (Not so unlike schools in different states in the USA where parents are asked to provide boxes of tissue and other fees.)
