My Créatures Marines Vintage Collection is inspired by the works of Charles Henry Dessalines d'Orbigny. D’Orbigny was a French botanist and geologist who specialized in the Tertiary Period of France (the geologic period from 65 million to 2.5 million years ago). At the National Museum of Natural History in Paris, this scientist identified many of the flowering plant species returned to France from his brother's natural history collecting journeys through South America. Sometime during the Victorian Era (1850s – 1860s), D'Orbigny compiled a monumental volume, the Dictionnaire Universel d’Histoire Naturelle, published by Renard & Martinet of Paris. This natural history publication features beautifully detailed hand-colored plates of plant and animal species created by the leading French artists of the day. These original engravings are over 150 years old and considered by many experts to be the finest and best-illustrated natural history work of the era. My goal is to show the beautiful blending of science and art through my Charles d’Orbigny inspired fabric designs.
