Description:

'Greek keys with horse races, on marble, by Su_G': Greek keys patterned in red, blue & black (see below) together with racing horses & riders on a 'marble' off-white (#f8f5ec) ground. My entry in the Greek Art Design Challenge. © Su Schaefer 2018

Thank you to my sources: (1) Jenkins for the color scheme, who writes:
"Early Greek architectural polychromy probably experimented with a wider range of colours but, by the fifth century BC, the most popular [were] red, blue, and gold applied as leaf. These were combined with the reserved ground of the white marble, thus adding a fourth colour. Red will have been a naturally occurring or artificially produced pigment such as oxide of iron. Blue was usually a copper silicate, either naturally occurring, as in volcanic rocks, or manufactured. The colour was the deep, rich, inky blue of lapis lazuli and is sometimes called Egyptian blue. Gold was the warm yellow tone of pure unalloyed metal, sometimes enhanced by an undercoat of red or blue (bole)"; and
(2) S. Bird (British Museum) for the drawing of the horses & riders from the north frieze cavalcade on the Parthenon, from which this has been adapted; both in

su_g says: Many thanks for your great comments & helpful feedback Amy, Deborah, Corinna & Rhonda - very much appreciated but I cannot claim total credit as the horses and riders have been adapted from S. Bird's drawings of the north frieze of the Parthenon (which I've never even seen)!
