background.
In my region, during the January days of sun and wind it arrives sometimes suddenly and unexpectedly, the scent of daffodils. They are the first messengers of the spring blooms. The "Daffodil" in question is the narcissus tazetta, the earlier and more rustic kind. The ancient myth associates it with Narcissus, a beautiful boy. The nymph Echo fell in love with him, but he pushed her away and as a revenge: She made him fall in love with his own reflection in the water. The poor young man died of consumption by the river and Venus, pity, turned it into a flower named as him "Narciso". Locally this small fragrant flower, spring messenger, is called "Ciciri e tria" i.e. pasta and chickpeas (a local traditional dish) where the yellow of the crown is the chickpea and the white petals are the pasta. If you offer a good plate of this Salento specialties to a friend you will be sure to keep it gratefully!
