One of the most iconic vehicles of the 20th century was the fifties incarnation of the Checker cab. Designed to be durable and easy to maintain, comfortable to sit in, and easy to get in and out of, it also had the distinction of being clunky to look at. But that was part of its charm. This is the next to the last body style that Checkers came in. (The last body style had dual headlights and a different grille). One can't think of a large city, particularly New York, without thinking of taxis, and the Checker, because it was designed with off the shelf parts and for fleet maintenance, was the top of the taxi line.
