Bees Contest. Line art. © Su Schaefer 2015
Bumblebee stripes: quarter-inch stripes in bumblebee yellow (or mustard) and off-white on black. My entry in the Bees Contest. © Su Schaefer 2015 Bumblebees are the only surviving group in "the tribe Bombini" (Wikipedia) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bumblebee) - what's not to like? I was tempted to call this "Don't pat me!" as a reminder of my first up-close experience of bumblebees (we don't have them in mainland Australia). My Bavarian husband had told me you could pat them. Seeing one busy in a flower I tried to pat it and it stung me. I guess it hadn't read the manual. The sting re-activated an old inch-ant sting and was painful for a week so I assume the active ingredient was similar. I don't recommend the experience, and the moral of this tale is: Don't pat them!
