Dork Alert: I can officially say I know a thing or two about the Medieval period, since I minored in it in college. Up until now, this novelty has only been remotely handy in random social settings, when I've felt the need to punctuate an evening by spouting off the first 18 lines of Canterbury Tales in Middle-English. In your face, Chaucer! But I digress. This design is a salute to the beauty of stained glass rose windows, (also known as wheel or catherine windows), which are a hallmark of the Medieval period. Unbelievably intricate and breathtaking examples can still be found in cathedrals around the globe; some personal favorites are in France. If you'd like a quick lesson on wimples or representations of the Virgin Mary in apse mosaics, just email me. Hahaha. I'm a dork, so what.

ms_corona

ms_corona says: Printed on clear adhesive decal or static cling for window display/installations would be more durable to the UV .... Victoria, I would worry about UV rays and it's effects of drastically fading the fabric - My thinking is the technology and pigments used may not be THAT fade resistant in actuality... Who could not love this? We are taught from near infancy to adore this graphic No? Sammy is smartttttt. I'm ordering some!

mina

mina says: sammyk -what does this look like held up to a window? Sometimes on closely woven fabric, like the quilting cotton (or cotton sateen?), colors really shine like stained glass with light coming through. We could all have stained glass windows!

Those cute guys know that dandy fabric squares equal pure haute (dog) couture! :)

lulakiti

lulakiti says: Omigod... SammyK - I don't even know where I would begin with such a theme!!! The possibilities are infinite! Isn't it funny how certain things can just excite you to no end? I can't even tell you how many times I have bored my family and friends with my over zealous rants about Demeter and Persephone. Hee hee.

Posted over 7 years ago.

sammyk

sammyk says: Lulakiti, I'd love to see a mythology theme; we must petition!

Posted over 7 years ago.

sammyk

sammyk says: Yay, yay, yay. So glad you all like it! It's a bigger repeat than usual, I know, but I think it works fragmented/cropped very nicely, so it could be used for smaller projects without losing the overall feel. I had another imaginary medieval idea which I passed on, as I could only come up with the title: "(Hand) Drawn & (Fat) Quartered." Maybe a certain charming conspirator named ceanirminger could help fill in the blanks of what that would look like. We'll take this (side) show on the road in no time! And WOW, uzumakijo, making actual stained glass....that's something I've never done (aside from those 70s-bake-in-the-oven kits that no longer exist). I'm very impressed! :)

lulakiti

lulakiti says: And I have to agree with uzumakijo about both you and ceanirminger not only being fabulous designers (you two inspire me!) but also entertaining Spoonflower comedians. Who knew there was so much comedy in fabric design? I love it!

Posted over 7 years ago.

lulakiti

lulakiti says: This is great! And I am so tickled by your sidebar - I was a classics major in college so if at any time Greek or Roman history, art or mythology should play a part in Spoonflower designs, I know I'll feel similarly. And my dorkdom will reign supreme!

Posted over 7 years ago.

uzumakijo

uzumakijo says: oh this is just fabulous, i love stained glass windows -so much i actually make them! although not on quite a grand a scale as this!! it's so glorious - love it so much - and also your sidebar commentry, you and ceanirminger are spoonflower's comedy doubleact and 2 of my favourite designers's - some people just get all the talent!! good luck in the contest although somehow i don't think you will need luck with a design this good!
