When Persephone was stolen by Hades to be his queen in the underworld, she knew that if she ate anything, she could never leave. After days, she yielded to temptation and ate 6 pomegranate seeds, which committed her to six months in the underworld each year. During that time, her mother, Demeter, the goddess of growth and fertility, allows everything to die in her grief. When Persephone is returned at the end of Winter, everything blooms again again in celebration in Spring.
