Volunteer firefighters of the various state Rural Fire Services have been gallantly fighting this menace. Only a massive rainfall can now put out these fires. Australia has been suffering from the effects of the worst drought in our long dry history. The land is arid and now it is on fire. There is a pall of smoke blowing across the country, bringing the reality of these out of control fires into the eyes and lungs of people who are far from the firegrounds.
