About the Design

When you look in Victorian books (1870's to 1902 or so) you rarely, if ever, see photographs. Instead they have etchings, which were often drawn from photographs, but turn all the halftone shadings of photos into hand engraved line art of black and white (or color if they were using non-black ink). Of course, it isn't true that they didn't have the ability to reproduce photographs. But those were typically done via lithography, and inserted into books as picture pages with little to no text. Along with etching the seed catalog roses, or whatever the subject was to be, the 19th century artists often added geometric patterns. Think the kind of extra ornamentation on a USA dollar bill. This red and white line art design attempts to share the feeling of Victorian etchings in an accurate (to the era) fine scale, and detail filled geometric way. (file z174j2-ch, #3765288)
