Coyote gourd (Cucurbita foetedissima) grows along roadsides and other dry places in the southwestern and midwestern US. While edible for humans in its young state, the gourd turns foul-tasting when mature. Coyotes, however, eat them regardless. Leaves and stems are rough to the touch. Other names are buffalo gourd, calabazilla, prairie gourd, Missouri gourd, fetid gourd, and wild pumpkin. Matching solids and coordinates are in the San Luis Valley and Marfa collections. Although it looks like a half-drop pattern, this design is set up as a straight repeat. If you will use it for wallpaper, there will be no waste in matching as there would be in a true half-drop design.
