Ganesha, The Remover of Obstacles, Patron of the Arts, Deva of Wisdom and Beginnings. Easy plushie cut and sew. Illustration by Eleanor Ramsay.
One of the best loved and most depicted of the Hindu pantheon, Ganesha can be found bringing his good fortune to households throughout the world.
Easy Assembly
Cut out the front, back and the rat art along the gold seams.
Align the front and back with the printed side in. Pin the pieces together. Stitch all around the edge, either tightly or with a gold border. Leave the bottom flap and seam open.
Turn so the art is facing out and stuff the inside with batting. If desired, embellish the art with embroidery and beading.
If you want the plushie to stand, stiffen the bottom flap with cardboard. Fold it back, tuck in any extra fabric, and stitch the bottom together.
Fold the Rat over print side in and stitch together. Stuff with batting. Attach to the base of the Ganesha plushie (or fill it with catnip and give it to your cat).
Symbolism and Attributes of Lord Ganesha
Large Ears to listen more. Large Head full of wisdom. Small Mouth speaks less. The Trunk represents strength and discrimination.
One Tusk has been cut representing the sacrifice necessary for knowledge.
He holds an Axe to cut out unhealthy attachments, a Rope to remove obstacles, a bowl of Sweets, and a hand outstretched in Blessing and Protection.
The Lotus represents
spiritual ascent.
The Belly is content and has digested the good and bad of the Universe.
The Rat attends Ganesha and represents the need to control desire.
