This etching came from a medical book published just after the end of the Civil War. Most of the illustrations in it were rather unspectacular--a lithographed color plate to show what a chicken pox rash looks like, or an artist's depiction of a bone. But this one of a tying two sticks to a chair to transport an injured patient caught my eye. Not only it a nice period chair. But it is a rocking chair. Now I ask you, what is the difference between tying these two sticks to a rocker and doing the same thing to any other four legged chair with that kind of construction? It isn't like they are going to push the chair anywhere. They are going to use human strength to pick it up from front and back. So why must it be a rocking chair? I dunno.
