Spavin is a bony growth within the lower hock joint of a horse. It is caused by osteoarthritis, and can cause lameness. Exactly how a 19th century liniment applied to the outside of the leg could fix it--well, not many 19th century medications did much more than make money for those who sold them. Colors are tan and an orangey red. It was exactly this aged and faded in the original magazine ad that I scanned it from. (file, Pict0332, #571692)
