Families come in all shapes and sizes, so I thought I would illustrate this with a variety of parent plus offspring examples from the natural world. The idea was triggered by seeing a swan with a large group of goslings on a lake in a countryside park in northern England recently. A dog barking on the bank was causing some alarm among the baby birds, at which point the swan's partner rose up to his full height , high above the surface of the water to ward off the danger. In this design, the situation is somewhat calmer - for the swans and the remainder of the creatures pictured.
