I love Spoonflower! Spoons and flowers for all of us who love Spoonflower! In coral and blue, summer hues. Great for clothing and home! From my Coral and blue, summer hues collection http://www.spoonflower.com/designs?view=117706 Oh, the romance! :) The Welsh Lovespoon dates back to the seventeenth century – the earliest known example date from 1667 in Wales and the custom spread through Europe. The oldest surviving spoon, made in 1667 is to be found at the Welsh Folk Museum at St. Fagans near Cardiff, although it is known that lovespoons were made by the menfolk of Wales before this date. My Lovespoons are rather rustic, crudely carved by a young man with more determination than skill fuelled by a heart full of love! The colour sceme suggests a rosy, cosy homeliness, perhaps a country cottage. In the "olden days" a young man would spend hours carving the spoon from a single piece of wood with his own hands, in the hope that the girl would accept it. If the girl accepted the spoon, she would demonstrate her interest in him and they would commence on a relationship, which is the origin of the word 'spooning'. It is easy to imagine a young man after a hard day's work, in a period of no radio or television or cars, spending his leisure time during dark evenings carving a spoon for the girl he loved, perhaps even squinting by candle light! Spoons are a symbol of comfort suggesting food on the table, and a cosy family life, which would impress on the girl his ability to care for her and a family. Designs on love spoons are also symbolic; for instance a heart means, "my heart is yours". Lovespoons with wooden spheres indicate that the carver would like children and the number he desired would be indicated by the number of spheres. Double spoons indicate "togetherness" The Cherry blossom is my favourite blossom. When Japanese people come together to view the cherry blossom trees and marvel at their beauty, they aren't just thinking about the flowers themselves, but also about the larger meaning and deep cultural tradition the cherry blossom tree. So, I think the message in this design is to celebrate love and life.
