This design is diagrammatic representations of historically important women, many of whom were denied their proper place in society. This is not a conventional toile, since I'd prefer to avoid getting entangled in the issues of intellectual property, copyright and public / celebrity image ownership entailed by representing real people. Instead the graphics are there to invoke the historical scenes involving the relevant personalities and the connecting flowers are the pastoral element. • comet = Caroline Herschel (1750-1848), astronomer • barred window = Elizabeth Fry (1780-1845), prison reformer • magnetic field = Mary Fairfax Somerville (1780-1872), physicist • spiral shell = Mary Anning (1799-1847), fossil hunter who should have been a palaeontologist • formula = Ada Lovelace (1815-1852), algorithmic programmer in the pre-computer era • old-style lamp = Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), medical reformer • radiation hazard layout of flasks and tubes = Marie Curie (1867-1934), physicist and chemist • dna helix pair = Rosalind Franklin (1920-1958), crystallographer (true discoverer of the structure of DNA, whose work was stolen from her by misogynists) Missing from the line-up are so very many more. Eg: • the prehistoric women who invented agriculture • Hypatia of Alexandria - whose work was destroyed by misogynistic religious zealots, as well as her person. • Emilie du Chatelet (1706-1749) • Marie-Anne Pierrette Paulze (1758-1836) • Lise Meitner (1878-1968) • the Suffragettes • Marthe Gautier (1925-), the real scientist behind the discovery that trisomy 21 causes Down's Syndrome Currently displaying a vertical version in plain black on white.
