T'was a cloudy night Brevan woke to hear, Honkings and flappings from very near, "We're lost!", he decyphered from the quacks, So he obligingly grabbed his Papa's "axe". Leading the gaggle, they flew all night, The geese keeping Brevan's guitar in sight. Till safely they reached their place of breeding, and Brevan made it home for his 6 o'clock feeding.

jellyfi...

jellyfishearth says: I totally understand about the "alas" comment. I have only one niece who is 9 months old and I can't stop sewing things for her. If I had a whole slew of the little cuties I would have to quit my day job to make enough blankets and stuff animals for them all. I too have a job, a careening toddler, a baby, and two dogs that think they are careening toddlers - so I totally understand about not having enough time. You obviously have a number of people on Spoonflower that believe in you and your talent. And now, through you, a whole community of people around the world know what cool dude Brevan is.

victori...

victorialasher says: Ditto on the "Holy Moses". Lets all nag poor Cean until she does a book to shut us up.

Posted over 5 years ago.

ceanirm...

ceanirminger says: Thanks! Also, while rereading my reply when I said "alas, he's not my only nephew", it sounds like I wish he was. Not so! I love them all, I only meant to say I have my work cut out for me and had better get on those other niece/nephew fabrics. Okay, guilty conscience is feeling better now with that bout of over explaining.

jellyfi...

jellyfishearth says: It's awesome to find out Brevan is real! I am glad you liked the story. I tried to maintain the rhythm of the poem, but it was hard to tell if I did or not. Good luck with all your other nieces and nephews!

Posted over 5 years ago.

ceanirm...

ceanirminger says: Holy Moses, Rachel!!!! That is awesome! Thansk so much for finishing the story (playing the guitar to guide the geese by sound- brilliant)! I'll definitely keep this for later when I have a chance to elaborate on Brevan's midnight adventures and show it to my sister, who is the real Brevan's mom. Alas, he's not my only nephew, so I have a slew of other neice and nephew fabrics to make before I can go back to Brevan, but your lovely story really has inspired me to come back to it. Thanks sooooo much!

Posted over 5 years ago.

jellyfi...

jellyfishearth says: Honestly though, I hope you like it. I was inspired by the pattern and wanted to share that. But I hope you can see how it could be made into a child's book, and with a few more illustrations you could easily publish it and you could put the poem in one of the opening pages.

Posted over 5 years ago.

jellyfi...

jellyfishearth says: There...now you have no excuse. More pictures! =) BTW, take out the "to" in the first sentence...and I proofread that like 5 times too. Sheesh.

Posted over 5 years ago.

jellyfi...

jellyfishearth says: Almost asleep Brevan rolled in his bed to glance out his window to at dark clouds overhead. His body was tired but his mind wide awake. He could feel his heart searching for something that night. His eyes began to close when he heard the first sounds. Honkings and flappings reached through his half open window. Raising the sill, Brevan stuck out his head. It was geese he saw, a lost flock of geese. It was his heart that they saw and it was to his heart that they called. "We're lost!" they cried and Brevan settled their fear. "I'm coming!" he replied and ran back inside. Frantically searching through the dark of his house, his hands grasped the handle of his papa's guitar. His "axe" it was called and to Brevan it felt right. Without thought or doubt he straddled that axe and flew out the window and into the night. They flew on and on out into the dark. Clouds upon clouds built in the sky until a large cumulus blocked out all sight. It was cold and dark and muffled all sound. As the flock could not call to each other, the geese became lost. Very soon Brevan flew on alone in the cloud. He called and he called but the sound would not carry. His heart felt sick and his hands became sweaty. They slipped and they worked against the strings of the axe. Looking down he knew what sound he could make that would pierce that stifling blanket. Sliding back to the edge of his seat, his fingers began strumming to his frantic heartbeat. The muffled deep tones of the unplugged electric shot forth into the cloud and echoed and reverberated. Loud and strong, it reached far to the geese, who knew right away it was the right path to seek. When, at last, they flew out of the cloud, it was as a full flock, a beautiful sight - Brevan and his Flying V. Their destination appeared with the first grays of dawn. A smooth, clean lake abutting a church. As Brevan flew over the water, he measured up peace as each goose landed. He circled the flock, carefully counting each one. Each goose folded their wings and honked out a message. Brevan was sure he could guess at the meaning. Homeward he flew, his course straight and his body weary. He alighted at last inside his left-open window. As he settled his thoughts, his momma started calling. On the way to the table, for his 6 o'clock feeding, he returned the axe to its place of belonging. As Brevan settled in his chair he folded his arms close to his body, and knew in his heart the geese's parting message. For as he looked first at his momma and then at his papa, his heart felt the warmth of a home worth great longing. The words he spoke were natural and true. "Thank you, thank you, and I love you."

ceanirm...

ceanirminger says: OOOh, you guys are the best! Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I was out of town this weekend and am still catching up. Thanks so much for the huge confidence boost! I dream of doing book illustrations, but what with my tiny attention span, addiction to fabric contests, job and careening toddler, I think it will have to wait a few years or decades before I tackle a whole book. Tiny fabric vignette stories are perfect practice, though! Thanks so much!

bard_ju...

bard_judith says: Well, let's all hassle Cean to get this up for sale and then put our money where our mouths are. I personally want a piece of this to frame - no kidding - for my daughter's room. It is done in a faery tale theme with original art (not the disney fairy style ....think Brian Froud and the Grimms) from my various talented friends. I have my eye on a couple of Cean's other fabrics for pillows and a hanging, too.

trcreative

trcreative says: Cean, I write this comment publically rather than sending you a private message because I believe there are others who might agree with my sentiments. This design is more than a fabric. It's a story. I hope you will consider expanding and publishing a children's book with your illustrations.

Posted over 5 years ago.

francine

francine says: It's so fabulous - classic illustrative style of a favorite story book but with a zing of unexpected cool and whimsy. It rocks. If ONLY they made children's clothing out of fabric like this! Or blankets! Or anything!

Posted over 5 years ago.

jennart...

jennartdesigns says: I want this fabric for my kids. And for me. It reminds me of my favorite children's book illustrations that I used to spend hours looking at and thinking about (yes, I was a weird kid!) That MM chose more of the same is disappointing, like so many others wrote!

ceanirm...

ceanirminger says: You guys! Thank you so much for the kind words and confidence boosters. It's the comments and connections with you all, wonderful designers who I respect on a artistic and personal level, who make these contests worth it!

Posted over 5 years ago.

ksteve

ksteve says: I agree with Nadja, I'm really still not over the choices made in this design contest. The blog's entry today made even more bizarre. We have to support imaginative art fabric ourselves, design for crafters not for the masses. Buy directly from the artists, leave out the big fabric names, maybe then they will open their eyes.

Posted over 5 years ago.

nadja_p...

nadja_petremand says: Once again I am surprised by the choice made in this contest bizarre. this drawing was exeptional. both in its graphic quality, as its creative originality. we must believe that most people prefer more banal creation, which were already seen many times.

tallula...

tallulahdahling says: I have to add my own shocked voice to everybody else's. I had no doubt that this would make it to the top ten. Not only does this design belong there, in my most adamant opinion, but you deserve it as a consistently excellent designer of exceptional imagination and skill. But the great thing is, this wonderful design exists. I hope it prints up beautifully, because I'm sure many people would get a lot of pleasure from having it.
