Description:

Twenty-four hours before the July 2010 Paper Collage themed fabric of the week contest was due to close I had no intention of entering, no designs up my sleeve, and ever so important laundry to do. I hadn't even considered attempting it as, with nerve and tendon damage as well as arthritis in my hand, sharp things and I really don't get on. However, at the eleventh hour, I decided the laundry could go hang itself; I was going to have a stab at it this collage thing.

This design was done purely for my own pleasure. I hummed Donovan's song Happiness Runs for most of the time I was making it.

Lately I've been experimenting with non-traditional colourways for nautical designs, my favourite theme. Here's one I haven't played with before. These little boats are trying hard to navigate rocky waters. Sometimes in the spotlight, sometimes in the dark. Mostly they're managing to find their way but occasionally one is going to come a little too close to the rocks. As with life, it isn't all smooth sailing.

I love how the beams of light from the central lighthouse could almost be the tails of that cheerful bow. It's fantastic to see the interesting things that people are doing with my designs.

inscribed_here says: That's exactly what I was aiming for as I put this one together. Thanks for noticing about the colours/night issue. I was thinking the same thing.

almost_...

almost_midnight says: Such a deceptive design. It really does seem like it's all smooth sailing at first but then there's that little boat that's about to get into trouble. The repeat is very interesting and totally effective. Any other layout and those eerie lighthouses may have become lost in a geometric pattern but this is wonderful. The black background remains free flowing, retaining that wonderful sense of the ocean's movement, with the little boats sliding in and out of the light. You mentioned working with non-traditional colorways and this certainly has that. It's brilliantly bold and dramatic, but it is also totally appropriate for the subject. I believe this may be the very first lighthouse fabric I have seen where the light is on at the appropriate time - night! What a remarkable effort to acheive this, from conception to completion, in less than a day. Very well done!

inscribed_here says: Thanks kdl, sammyk and ceanirminger!

You're right, Cean, there's definitely something a little spooky about that lighthouse. Perhaps you can sense that there will be no door to be found... once you're on the inside.

ceanirm...

ceanirminger says: this is super! The motif is awesome, it's reminding me of some creepy lighthouse stories my mom read to me as a kid (Jamaica Inn, anybody?). Maybe it's that boat that seems to have gotten hung up on the rocks. Oh, the drama! love it.

fussyb says: I agree, this is a very dramatic design. The repeat is interesting and works to produce a boldly eye-catching and effective overall pattern. I would not have know it was a last minute effort if you hadn't told us. It turned out very well.
