gears connected...because...you know me...
So the story: 1968...an epic year in Rock and Roll and counterculture..."Disraeli Gears", Clapton, Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce's second album as the band Cream is a huge hit. I was nine, and the coolest thing that could ever happen to me was for my big brother to invite me into his room to listen to his records. Trippy flourescent heavy soaring music that pulled us into the future. And that summer it was "Sunshine of Your Love." Sure...go find it on youtube...I'll wait. Disraeli what??? Ulysses who??? I was a kid and whatever the music was about was deeply inscrutable to me...as was looking at the album art...folding it open...pictures of the band...completely random pictures, giving up no clue about which guy was Clapton...must be the one with the most soulful eyes...It wasn't like these guys ever showed up on TV...there was no way I'd ever get to a concert... Starting with the Beatles, the British Invasion captured my young heart, and the British Invasion was all over the radio. (93 KHJ...Boss Angeles!) London! So enticing and far away! Mary Quant! The goddess of all fashion things 1960s and wonderful! But I could dream I was a Carnaby Street Mod girl of impossible groovy-ness. P.S. My daughter is now the proud owner of her uncle's awesome vinyl collection...still spinning on the turntable, still pure magic...
